Bali Blue: Indonesia's Volcanic Coffee, Explained

Where Bali Blue Comes From

Not all island coffees are the same. Bali Blue grows at 1,200–1,600 meters above sea level in the Kintamani highlands of Bali, Indonesia — a region defined by volcanic loam soil, cool mountain temperatures, and smallholder farming traditions stretching back generations.

The altitude slows the maturation of each cherry, concentrating sugars and building the layered complexity that sets this origin apart from lower-grown Indonesian coffees.

How It's Processed: Wet-Hulling

Bali Blue uses a processing method called wet-hulling (locally known as Giling Basah), which is distinctly Indonesian. After pulping, the coffee is dried only partially before the parchment layer is removed while the bean is still moist — then dried again on raised beds.

This two-stage drying approach produces the characteristic body and earthy richness that Indonesian coffees are known for, while the raised-bed finish allows for greater clarity and sweetness in the cup.

What It Tastes Like

Velvety. Rich. Transportive. Our medium-dark roast brings forward:

  • Dark Chocolate — a deep, bittersweet backbone
  • Molasses — slow-burning sweetness with caramel depth
  • Brown Sugar — a rounded, lingering finish

The body is full without being heavy — smooth enough to drink straight, bold enough to cut through milk for a café-style experience.

Best Brewing Methods

French Press (Recommended)

French press is the ideal match for Bali Blue. The full-immersion method preserves every drop of the coffee's natural oils and body. Use a coarse grind, 4-minute steep, and a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio.

Espresso

Bali Blue pulls beautifully as espresso. Its bold body and chocolate notes translate into a rich, syrupy shot. Aim for a 1:2 ratio at 93°C with a 25–28 second extraction.

Pour Over

For a cleaner, more nuanced cup, pour over highlights the molasses sweetness and brown sugar finish. Use a medium-coarse grind, bloom for 30 seconds, and pour in slow, controlled circles.

Drip Coffee

A reliable everyday method. Medium grind, standard 1:16 ratio, and you'll have a grounding, comforting cup every morning.

Pairings

Bali Blue pairs exceptionally well with dark chocolate desserts, caramel pastries, spiced cookies, or steamed milk for a rich, café-style latte experience.
